Title: Benefit of Upgrading to XP
Posted on 2007.09.07

There are many advantages to upgrading to a Windows XP system. Here are a few of them, and how they can help your business to be more efficient. If you have any questions regarding upgrading to Windows XP, contact us and we will be glad to answer any questions.

1. Better USB support - This ends up being a major issue for us with Windows 98. In order to add a peripheral device, such as a printer, or a USB flash drive, you must have the software with it to install. The problem is, the software that comes with these devices is usually not Windows 98 compatible. In most cases, Windows XP will install these devices automatically, without needing any software.

2. Networking Advantages - Windows XP provides better networking capabilities. Having all your computers together on a network lets you integrate a network printer. This single printer will let you print from any computer in your store to one location, rather than having to try to go to one workstation with a printer hooked to it every time you need to print something. If you dont have a printer at all - think of the possibilities: easily print a diagram, an illustration, or a picture of a part that you pull up in a catalog lookup. You can also print from any manufacturers website or from a CD that a manufacturer sends you (for example, Gates belt routing diagrams).

3. Sliplink runs better - We have noticed, on Windows 98 computers, that the pc workstation running sliplink tends to get bogged down while trying to do a refresh from another station. This is something that is not an issue with Windows XP.

4. Support for 3rd Party Applications - Many third party applications are not compatible with Windows 98. Quickbooks is probably the most popular accounting program out there today, and many jobbers use it. It will work in Windows XP, but not in 98.

5. Better Com Port Support - Com ports are better supported in Windows XP. In Windows 98, closing the Point of Sale or Managment applications can cause hang-ups with the server. Windows XP prevents this. It even allows you to change settings on the com ports, like changing the name for instance. This is helpful in diagnosing any problems.

6. Warehouse Communications - We have noticed, that on PCs running warehouse stock check, that these manufacturers websites operate better on Windows XP.

Summary - Customers have noticed how much better the Windows XP operating system runs over Windows 98. It provides smoother operation with the server, preventing hang-ups and other com port issues. It's more flexible with USB devices, like wireless internet adapters and flash drives. It's quicker with manufacturers websites. It also allows you to run applicaions such as Quickbooks for your accounting needs. Overall, we are confident that you will be pleased with a faster, more efficient system when you upgrade your hardware.
